What's important, heater works only if there is fuel within it (you should add it from time to time). When temperature shown in the left upper corner of the screen is low, simple heater protects you from its repercussions. Opinion: In long term it's good to invest in three beds (or even more when size of your group becomes bigger later in the game). Although members of the group can sleep on the ground, sleeping on the bed makes them more rested and happy.
